At the start of each New Year, I’ve stopped setting resolutions. Like so many others, I’ve been there before—heading into January full of positive thoughts and ambitious plans for how I’ll change my life. But once life picks up its usual pace, and the hamster wheel starts turning those intentions often slip away, lost in the busy hum of the everyday.
Six years ago, I decided to try something different. Instead of resolutions, I began choosing a single word to focus on for the year. It’s so much simpler, more definitive, and something I can carry with me throughout the months ahead. It acts as a guide, especially on those darker days when I need a reminder to keep striving forward. And honestly? It’s worked wonders.
Last year, my word was Celebrate. I chose it for a couple of big reasons. First, I was about to become a grandmother for the very first time—a truly incredible milestone.
Second, my business was reaching its 10th birthday, a huge achievement that I wanted to acknowledge and cherish and celebrate. But there were smaller, everyday reasons to celebrate, too—things we often take for granted.
My health, my family, the simple joys of life, and yes, even the funds to pay my tax bill! (Who wants to pay that? But after losing a business in the early 2000's, I know what a privilege it is to have a thriving business today. That alone is something worth celebrating.)
How we choose to view life truly shapes every single day. We can focus on the good, even when it’s hard, and boy, does it take effort at times! But the rewards are worth it.
This year, my word is Balance. It feels like the perfect focus. Life is all about balance, isn’t it? And we can all make small improvements by considering where our scales might be a little off. For me, it’s about being more balanced in my eating habits—no extreme food fads, just a mindful approach. Exercise, too, will find its place, but without the pressure of perfection.
I’m also rethinking my relationship with my phone.
When I get home in the evening, I’ll pop it on a shelf—within hearing distance but out of reach—to stop the endless scrolling. I’d like to focus on one thing at a time. For instance, instead of reading with the TV murmuring in the background, I’ll carve out quiet time to actually enjoy the books I’ve been meaning to read. One word can hold so much meaning. It can gently guide your choices, remind you of what truly matters, and help you stay grounded when life feels overwhelming.
So, what about you? If you were to choose a word for the year, what would it be? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
